Degrowth & Strategy - How to enable strategic thinking in theory and practice Strategy is a problematic concept, having been more engaged with in the military and corporate worlds rather than in social movements. And yet in Degrowth & Strategy we have argued that to bring about socio-ecological transformation in line with degrowth values, it is important to think about strategy. In this talk, I will introduce the understanding of the strategy we have adopted in the book, outline a strategic canvas for degrowth through a critical dialogue with the work of Erik Olin Wright, and, finally, suggest how strategic thinking can be enabled by social movements, academics, and citizens.

Except for sleep, humans spend more of their lifetimes on work than on any other activity, and many have come to take for granted the standard 40h workweek in developed countries as a 'natural configuration of time'. In recent decades, however, prevailing conceptions of work are being destabilized, and degrowth proponents are advocating work time reduction as a measure to reduce environmental pressure, reduce unemployment, and enhance human well-being. Drawing on insight from history, anthropological research, and time-use studies, this talk aims at broadening the frames harnessing current debates about the future of work. First, we examine evolving conceptions of work in different cultures and review patterns of working time throughout history. Next, we present ideas and principles to rethink work and working time along ecological economic principles of sustainability and justice.

A team of researchers from England, Scotland, Norway, and Denmark have joined forces to develop a safe and efficient phage therapy approach to control the bacteria Pasteurella in farmed Salmon. In this newly released video, the researchers behind the project reveal how phages can help fight diseases not only in fish but also in swine and poultry.
Several researchers and staff from Center for Evolutionary Hologenomics, Globe Institute are involved in the important project that can help the aquaculture industry become healthier and more sustainable by battling disease and at the same time avoid antibiotic resistance.
The research project is funded by the Norwegian Seafood Research Fund.

The FindingPheno project will improve how we understand and utilise the functions provided by microbiomes in combating human diseases as well as the way we produce sustainable food for future generations. This newly funded EU Research and Innovation Action awarded to Assoc Prof Shyam Gopalakrishnan and Assoc Prof Morten Limborg, both from Center for Evolutionary Hologenomics and colleagues across Europe, will start on the 1st of March and be placed within the Center for Evolutionary Hologenomics. In Denmark, the modern history of food science begins with the establishment of the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University (RVAU) at Frederiksberg in 1858 – which today is a part of the University of Copenhagen. The RVAU employed researchers/teachers who, through research, dissemination and education, paved the way for a huge export adventure of butter and bacon at a time when Denmark was struggling to keep up the export of cereals.

One of the key researchers was Niels Johannes Fjord, the Niels Bohr of food science in Denmark. Fjord was extremely energetic and set up his own experimental institution, where he and colleagues from the RVAU developed brilliant solutions to problems that were crucial to Denmark’s economy and helped to create the foundation for the Danish welfare system. Fjord’s research became incredibly important when falling prices and high international competition in the grain market meant that Denmark had to majorly reorganise its agriculture. Butter and bacon became the new gold for the country’s export earnings. The question is whether today we are facing a similarly radical shift in food production?

The challenges of climate, human demand and the UN’s sustainability goals are forcing us to question our current food production. Perhaps we are on the threshold of a new revolution, having to come up with solutions to feed an increasing population in a sustainable way.

Professor of Food Chemistry Leif Skibsted is the host who shows us the past of Danish food science and draws threads right up to the present.

Climate change is inextricably linked with the 21st century challenges of water, food and energy resources, and of health and development. Nowhere is this more evident than in the cities of the world. So what solutions are out there to match these great challenges, while also creating a thriving economy and increasing liveability and quality of urban life?

On November 26th, Sir David King, UK Foreign Secretary Special Representative for Climate Change and Laura Storm, Executive Director of the Scandinavian think tank Sustainia highlighted concrete initiatives whereby existing cities can adapt and lower their footprint, and new cities can be designed to be climate-smart and resilient from the start.
