Star are formed by gas and dust clouds, which becomes more and more dense in the center and eventually becomes so compact that it collapses into a ball of burning gas - a star is born. The remnants of the gas and the dust cloud rotate in a disc around the newly formed star and the elements begin to accumulate into larger and larger clumps.The clumps grow and gradually the first small protoplanets are formed. They grow and become planets. A new solar system with planets is formed.

The traditional form of teaching with lectures in large auditoriums is being supplemented with physics experiments, where the students themselves work with the experiments. This has resulted in a very high pass rate.

X-shooter

X-shooter is the world's most sensitive instrument of its kind to observe the Universe from Earth.

The new astronomical instrument for European giant telescopes, the VLT in Chile makes it possible to observe phenomena in the universe more than twice as good as the best so far.

Danish researchers from the Niels Bohr Institute have developed and built a large portion of the mechanics and electronics for the project.

On top of the Greenland ice sheet a group of icecore-scientists are starting a project of drilling a 2.5 km long ice core out of the ice sheet. The ice sheet on Greenland holds a unique archive over the climatic conditions on our planet. The archive reaches back more than hundred thousand years.

We follow the scientists on their way to the drilling site for the NEEM-project. And we see how they build the camp.

NBI NEWS: GOLDEN SPIKE IN ICE CORE

The Ice and Climate research team at Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen has led the NordGRIP project, which drilled a column of ice core all the way from the top of the inland ice through more than 3 kilometers of ice – down to the bottom.

The ice contains information about past climates, something that has gained an entirely new significance – in the determination of the geological ages of the Earth.

For the ice can answer a geological question that nobody else has been able to answer before – that is to establish the precise time that the last glacial period ended and the warmer present-day climate began.

CERN – Power research in the mysteries of the Universe

AT the largest particle accelerator, LHC at CERN, researchers collide nuclei and protons at the highest energies ever reached on Earth.

It is the largest physics experiment in the world. Here, the highest temperatures in the Universe are produced and measured – and also some of the lowest temperatures in the magnets and the LHC ring. The enormous energies are necessary, for Danish researchers from the Niels Bohr Institute to investigate in detail how the Universe looked in the very first fraction of a second after the Big Bang.

The purpose of the experiments is to explore natures fundamental forces, that govern the Universe, in particular the strong and weak forces.

These new and spectacular experiments offer completely new possibilities for studying the conditions prevailing in the Universe billions of years ago, only about 1 millionth of a second after its birth.

MARS: The Phoenix Mission, Part 2

After having flown 250 million kilometres through the solar system, Phoenix landed on the 25th of May 2008 in the northern polar region.

Here there is water in the form of ice under the surface and now researchers can begin to investigate the habitability of the planet. Just below the surface there could be traces of life – life in the form of microorganisms. Just a week after the landing researchers dig down with the robot arm and take the first spoonful of Martian soil, which will be examined by an instrument on the lander’s deck.

MARS: The Phoenix Mission, Part 3

The Phoenix Mars Lander produces power using large solar panels, so it is only during the summer months that the mission has enough sunlight to carry out all of the experiments and the researchers work around the clock. The experiments show, that there is water in the form of ice just below the surface. But are there also other conditions for biological life? That is what the chemical analysis of the soil can reveal. Violent storms blow the dust around in the air and it is captured by the Danish dust magnets on the lander. The dust is being studied by the Danish research team from the Niels Bohr Institute. The actual airborne dust can tell about water’s effect and with that the basis for life on the harsh planet.

Every year the University of Copenhagen welcomes all new students at the official Matriculation Ceremony. The ceremony takes place on the Friday in week 35 on the start of study. This year the Matriculation was held Friday 2 September 2011.

The Matriculation Ceremony begins with an official welcome in the Ceremonial Hall at Frue Plads in the afternoon and continues with a social event in the courtyard Lindegården.
