Changes in the Gulf Stream System, planetary waves and extreme weather

Global warming does not simply warm up our planet’s surface – rather it has some interesting and complex effects on the circulation of its atmosphere and oceans, which will be explored in this lecture.

The disproportionate warming of the Arctic has been linked in recent research to changes in the activity of planetary waves and the jet stream in the atmosphere. In the ocean, observations point to an ongoing slow-down of the Gulf Stream System. Both types of circulation change may have profound impacts on us humans.

As the global movement towards coordinated and comprehensive climate policies grows, what is the role of climate science (and scientists) in supporting this work that is happening largely outside of traditional scientific realms? To meaningfully make progress towards the mitigation and adaptation targets called for by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, we need to embrace alternative models for how science is conducted, redefine the legitimacy of the roles scientists can play in society, and critically evaluate what constitutes knowledge in the context of climate change science. This talk will explore different approaches that go beyond ‘basic research’ to support the application and use of climate science across sectors and examine the challenges and opportunities facing researchers, elected officials and the public as we work together to integrate climate science into decision-making at a range of local, national and international scales.

Dr. Heidi Roop is Lead Scientist for Science Communication at the University Washington’s Climate Impact Group in Seattle, Washington. She is also an Affiliate Assistant Professor in the UW School of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences and serves as an advisor to the Northwest Climate Adaptation Science Center.

Current UN projections suggest that maximum population size will reach 10 to 12 billion by the end of the 21st century. In this talk Sarah Harper, CBE, Professor of Gerontology at the University of Oxford, explored the contribution of both falling fertility and falling mortality rates to this increase. The gap between achieved fertility and fertility ideals is still notably higher in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) than elsewhere, relating to both under- and overachievement of fertility ideals.

The lecture is the keynote lecture of the Centre for Healthy Aging Retreat 2018 and is co-hosted by Sustainability Science Centre and Centre for Healthy Aging. Chairs are Professor Katherine Richardson and Professor Lene Juel Rasmussen.The lecture took place on 18 December 2018.

The societal transformation required to remain within planetary boundaries requires changes at multiple levels, in various sectors of society, and in a variety of contexts. Accelerating collective learning through local experimentation in social innovations shall be essential to that effect. To support this, we need an Enabling State: a form of government that could empower local communities to experiment with new ways of producing, consuming or sharing, to win the race against the degradation of the ecosystems. While the Welfare State, in its classic insurance and redistributive functions, remains essential to the ecological transition, it should now combine these functions with that of supporting social experimentation.

Olivier De Schutter (LL.M., Harvard University ; Ph.D., University of Louvain (UCL)), the UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights and the former UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food (2008-2014), is a Professor at UCLouvain and at Sciencespo. He has also taught in the past at Columbia University, at Yale University, and at UC Berkeley, and was awarded the Francqui Prize, the most prestigious scientific award in Belgium, for his work at the intersection of human rights and governance. He chairs the International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems (IPES-Food).

Sustainability Lecture - Wild Fires and Wild Policies: Sustaining the World’s...

Wild fires are not at all common in rainforests, but sadly wild policies are becoming more common. Climate change has reached a tipping point, becoming a climate crisis that is having a domino effect on many of our world’s forests and agroforests. Forests made our planet more habitable, and their destruction will make it distinctly uninhabitable for humans and much other terrestrial life. This talk explored the benefits of our forests, how their functions transcend national boundaries, and how our strategies and actions should also transcend them.

Tony Simons has worked for over thirty years on issues at the agriculture/forestry interface. This experience has been gained in over 50 countries in the private sector (Shell), academia (University of Oxford), official development assistance (ODA/DFID) and research (CGIAR). He has a PhD in genetics from Cambridge University (UK) as well as an Honorary Professorship in Tropical Forestry at the University of Copenhagen.

The talk took place on 24 October 2019 and was moderated by Bo Larsen, Professor at the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, University of Copenhagen.

The ocean is a source of life: it provides half the oxygen we breathe, and it’s home to 50-80 per cent of all life on earth. The ocean is a source of livelihoods: more than 1 in 10 people depend on fisheries and aquaculture, and the global ocean economy is set to double in 15 years. The ocean is under threat: global warming, pollution, overfishing and loss of biodiversity cause harm to the planet, devastate lives and livelihoods and undermine economic and social development. How can we take action against the threats, optimize ocean opportunities and ensure that the ocean contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals?

Vidar Helgesen currently serves as Norway’s Special Envoy for the Ocean. Prior to this Helgesen was Minister of Climate and the Environment, Minister of EEA and EU Affairs and Chief of Staff to Prime Minister Erna Solberg.

Sustainability Lecture: Who is to blame for extreme weather events?

Today, it is well established that climate change will enviably lead to more extreme weather events across the globe. However, the specific chain of causality between emitter and victim, until now, remains uncertain. The emerging controversial science of extreme event attribution allows us to specifically assess how climate change is affecting specific hazards. With respective advances made in environmental social sciences and legal studies, we are at a threshold of establishing causal links between climate change and concrete extreme events.

In this panel, Fredi Otto, Emily Boyd and Kristian Cedervall Lauta, offered an insight into attribution from a physical, social and legal perspective, and discussed what the potential implications of reaching a threshold in this arena might be.

Over the past 50 years air transport has changed the world in which we live. Aviation growth, linked to the declining cost of flying, has given rise to new patterns of trade and migration, multicultural societies and the international tourism industry. The resulting social and economic benefits are significant, but so too the adverse environmental costs. The rapid growth of the industry is outstripping the rate of technological and operational improvements with the result that key environmental impacts are increasing year on year, a trend that is unsustainable. At a local level these are already constraining the growth of airports, meanwhile at a global level, given its reliance upon carbon fuels, the twin threats of climate change and peak oil threaten the very existence of the industry in its current form, in the longer term. Failure to deal with these environmental issues will result in increasing airport constraints, fuel and emissions costs leading to the disappearance of low cost flying. On the other hand, action to resolve these impacts (e.g. investment in step change technologies) also threaten significant increases in the cost of flying, which again have the potential to depress demand and therefore the role that aviation will play in a low carbon economy in 50 years time.

This lecture explores how the 6th largest economy, aka California plans to meet its carbon and renewable energy goals as it transitions the economy to GHG free solutions. The focus will be on new programs on the State level to encourage efficiency, demand response, electric transportation, storage and regionalisation of the electricity grid to allow for more intermittent solar and wind power resources to integrate into the power infrastructure.

Angelina Galiteva is an attorney and holds a J.D. and LLM Degrees, specialising in Environmental and Energy Law. She works to structure and advance the implementation of cutting edge energy policies that reflect the increasing role of renewable energy, storage, energy efficiency, electric mobility and distributed energy technologies worldwide.

This lecture explores if it would be environmentally responsible - or even a remotely good idea - to transport mud from one end of the world to the other, in the hope that Greenland would benefit economically with a new and sustainable industry, while people in the tropics will achieve a new level of wealth, better nutrition, and a brighter future.

Minik Rosing´s research interests include the formation and stabilization of Earth’s continents and the emergence and early evolution of Life. He has found traces of the very earliest life in Greenland. Minik is currently heading a research group on Geobiology at the Natural History Museum of Denmark and is also head of the cross-disciplinary research initiative Greenland Perspective.

Bumblebees are amongst the most important of wild pollinators, and concerningly, many bumblebees are in decline. Dave Goulson will discuss the drivers of these declines and highlight the many things we can all do to halt and reverse them to ensure a future for these vitally important insects. Perhaps, if we save a bee today, we can save the world tomorrow.

Dave Goulson is a Professor at the University of Sussex and the author of Bumblebees; Their Behaviour, Ecology and Conservation, A Sting in the Tale, and A Buzz in the Meadow. He has published more than 270 scientific articles on the ecology and conservation of bumblebees and other insects. Goulson founded the Bumblebee Conservation Trust in 2006, a charity which has grown to 10,000 members.

The Sustainable Development Goals – a necessary revolution.

Mogens Lykketoft, an economist and a politician, has been in Parliament since 1981 and was the President of the United Nations General Assembly 2015-2016 during the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Agreement. He talked about the preparation for the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals to become a reality and how the goals should provide a harmonic future for this planet.

Katherine Richardson, Professor in Biological Oceanography, Leader of Sustainability Science Centre, moderated the talk, which took place in the Ceremonial Hall on 14 March. The lecture was co-hosted by the Sustainability Science Centre and UCPH’s Working Group for Global Development.

Scenarios have been a tool of business for half a century. Companies gain the capacity to think ahead in rapidly changing complex competitive environments and make crucial decisions in absence of complete information about the future. Currently, at many regional scales of governance there is a growing need for democratically legitimate tools that enable the actors at local-scales to address pressing concerns in the midst of uncertainty. This is particularly true of areas experiencing rapidly changing environments and complex social problems. Resilience theory and deliberative democracy both promote governance by informed actors in an effort to produce decisions that avoid social-environmental collapse. This talk represents the first set of results from two projects from Alaska’s Arctic Slope region. Resident expert participants from the Northwest Arctic and North Slope Boroughs addressed the focal question “What is needed for healthy sustainable communities by 2040?” The results contribute to a truly multi-disciplinary cross-cultural discussion of the importance of innovative Indigenous thinking at the local scale in a rapidly changing Arctic.

Professor Sir Andy Haines discussed the findings of The Rockefeller Foundation-Lancet Commission on planetary health, which has documented how these environmental trends pose major challenges to sustaining health advances of recent decades. He outlined how such trends and their drivers can affect a range of health outcomes such as non-communicable diseases, water-related and vector-borne diseases. Furthermore he explored the health effects of increased frequency and intensity of extreme events, such as floods, droughts, and heat waves, and the impacts of environmental change on food security and undernutrition.

The event took place on 8 March and was moderated by Steffen Loft, head of the Department of Public Health at University of Copenhagen, Professor, DMSc.

Sustainable Development Goals - Rethinking Sustainable Development in the Post-2015 Era

On February 25th, Magdy Martínez-Solimán, UNDP’s Assistant Administrator and Director of the Bureau for Policy and Programme Support, gave a sustainability lecture at the University of Copenhagen. He explored the possible paths to implementation of the Post-2015 agenda, the implications for national and regional governments, and the current knowledge gaps that must be addressed by research communities.

How cities can respond to 21st century climate change challenges

Climate change is inextricably linked with the 21st century challenges of water, food and energy resources, and of health and development. Nowhere is this more evident than in the cities of the world. So what solutions are out there to match these great challenges, while also creating a thriving economy and increasing liveability and quality of urban life?

On November 26th, Sir David King, UK Foreign Secretary Special Representative for Climate Change and Laura Storm, Executive Director of the Scandinavian think tank Sustainia highlighted concrete initiatives whereby existing cities can adapt and lower their footprint, and new cities can be designed to be climate-smart and resilient from the start.

Why Do We Ignore Risk in Power Economics?

Sean Meyn, Director of the Florida Institute for Sustainable Energy, provided an entertaining overview of the origins of U.S. power markets, and how federal agencies are attempting to right the wrongs. Meyn challenged the audience with a quiz on the “value of power” and highlighted exciting possibilities with better public policy for the creation of responsive and reliable resources. This could help manage a grid with significant renewable energy integration. The lecture took place on November 25th 2014.
